KOLKATA: Government agency – Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new feature that locks users their Aadhaar number. (Lock Aadhaar Card) or lets unlock. This is in line with the UIDAI’s operation for stricter protection on the user’s Aadhaar details.

This new feature locks users their Aadhaar number (Lock Aadhaar Card) or lets unlock. If locked, authentication services such as demographic, biometric, or OTP-based verification cannot be used for KYC requirements, which will protect you from fraudulent activity.

How to Lock Your Aadhaar Number (Lock Aadhaar Card)

A user can use two methods to lock his Aadhaar number:

How to Lock Your Aadhaar Number Through UIDAI Portal

  1. Step 1: Go to www.uidai.gov.in website.
  2. Step 2:my reservoirSelect the tab andAadhaar Lock/UnlockClick on the option.
  3. Step 3:Lock UIDClick on the option and fill in the required details.
  4. Step 4: NowSend OTPClick on, it will be sent to the registered mobile number.
  5. Step 5: Enter OTP and click on submit, now your Aadhaar number is locked.

How to lock your Aadhaar number via SMS

A user can lock their Aadhaar number via SMS following the following steps:

Step 1: Send an SMS to 1947 from registered mobile number. The format of the message should be like this:

getotp <Aadhaar number-end-4-digit>

Step 2: You will get a six-digit OTP via SMS from UIDAI.

Step 3: Now to lock your Aadhaar number, send a second message with the format.

LockUID <Aadhaar number-last 4-digit> <6-digit-otp>

Note: If the same mobile number is registered with multiple Aadhaar numbers, the user has to send the last eight digits of Aadhaar instead of the last four numbers.

How to unlock your Aadhaar number

Just like locking Aadhaar number, a user can unlock their Aadhaar number through either UIDAI portal or SMS.

How to unlock your Aadhaar number through UIDAI Portal

Step 1: Go to www.uidai.gov.in website.

Step 3: Unlock UIDClick on the option and fill in your virtual ID and security code in the correct fields.

Step 4: To get OTP on registered mobile numberSend OTPClick on the option.

Step 5: Enter OTP to unlock your Aadhaar number andSubmitchoose.

How to unlock your Aadhaar number via SMS

Step 1: From the registered mobile number, send an SMS to 1947 in the following format:

gettp <virtual-id-end-6-digit>

Step 2: You will get a six-digit OTP via SMS.

Step 3: To unlock your Aadhaar number, send the second SMS to 1947 in the following format.

UnlockUID <virtual-id-end-6-digit> <otp-6-digit>

For example, in locking Aadhaar number, if multiple Aadhaar numbers are associated with the same mobile number, the user has to send the last 10 digits of their virtual ID instead of six-digits.
