A sudden flood in the city! KP-Boat Club Road is rising, is the responsibility of the riverside project?

KP-Boat Club Road: When the monsoon falls, the first fear in the minds of the common people of the city is about the increase in the water level. Every resident of the city knows how the sudden rain of several days destroys the rhythm of life. From going to office to returning home, schooling to car parking—everything is a sign of discomfort due to the accumulation of water. It is with this reality that another new thought has been added, which is now creating horror in the lives of people along the Mula-Mutha river.

City development or new crisis

Various development projects are being taken to change the shape of the city. Roads, bridges, riverside beautification—all for the convenience of people. But every action has a positive and negative effect. The question of the common people is, is this development increasing their security, or instead pushing them to danger? After the rains for the past few days, the scenery that has been seen by the river has reached the extreme level of panic among the residents.

Concerns about rising water levels

Residents of Koregaon Park in Pune, Boat Club Road and North Main Road say that the river water level has increased abnormally in just 2-3 days of rain. They alleged that River Front Development – RFD project blocked the natural flow of the river. As a result, water is accumulating during torrential rains and water is entering the surrounding housing societies. According to residents, this problem has occurred 2-3 times a year in the past, but now it is frequent, which is raising concern.

Citizens’ anger and experience

On the night of August 19, water entered the premises of several housing societies and sank from the car parking to the garden. Local residents are complaining that every time a temporary dam is washed away, it is rebuilt again. This is wasting money for taxpayers. According to Roda Mehta, a resident of Boat Club Road, ‘If this happens in just a few days of rain, then it is terrible to imagine what will happen in the continuous rain.’ According to Satish Pradhan, a resident of Kalyaninagar, long-standing RFD work is creating waterlogging in the river, and this is why the risk of flooding in the surrounding areas is increasing.

Experts and opinions of the authorities

Environmentalists and experts had previously warned that the RFD project would adversely affect the natural flow and ecosystem of the river. Shailja Deshpande of Jivanadi organization said that this problem is becoming evident today due to the lack of accurate calculation of the capacity of the river and the water flow. According to him, buffer zones and wetlands should be created immediately to avoid urban flooding. On the other hand, PMC Executive Engineer Bipin Shinde claimed that the problem will be solved once the work is completed. However, some of the residents feel that the problem will increase due to the mistake in the original plan. The question remains – will the common people be ready for life in the water in the name of the development of the city?
