Kolkata: Indian Railways is going to introduce strict baggage rules for passengers like airports. According to a media report, the weight limit of the luggage will be introduced and passengers will have to carry their luggage through electronic weight machines at important railway stations.
The report also said that those who carry bags exceeding the allowed weight limit, or even carry extra heavy luggage, will have to pay extra charges or fines. Indian Railways is also launching premium single-brand outlets in renovated stations.
According to the report citing an official, these outlets are expected to provide clothing, footwear, electronics, travel equipment, etc., which will increase the facilities and increase the revenue of the railways.
The permissible limit will vary depending on the class of trains: AC first class passengers will be allowed to carry a maximum load of 70 kg, AC two tier 50 kg, and AC three tiers and sleepers up to a maximum of 40 kg, the report said. Also, normal class passengers will be allowed to carry a maximum of 35 kg. Overweight bags will be fined, even if they are below a certain weight range.
Initially, the service will be launched at important stations in NCR zone, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Cheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Gobindpuri and Itawa.
Reconstruction of Prayagraj Junction
The Prayagraj Junction Railway Station is underway under the Amrit Bharat Station project, with a major remodeling project, which costs ₹960 crore. The project aims to convert the station into a model rail hub, which will have a nine-storey structure with world-class amenities, with features such as spacious waiting lounge, high-speed Wi-Fi, solar system, rainwater collection, automatic ticket vending machines and digital information display.
From December 2026, only passengers with valid train tickets will be allowed to enter the terminal area and the ticket will act like a boarding pass as an air travel. Also, non-passengers will need a platform ticket, which will serve as a visitor pass, the report said. The government has not officially confirmed these changes.
